The main way used a pump that forced the water from the tender through a preheater to raise the temp. of the water going into the boiler so it would be closer to the temp of the boiler water so as not to shock the boiler and or cause a drop in the temp of the boiler water. Turn a steam valve on in the cab and the pump started to inject the water.
