In terms of the Manufacturing Process. Vitrified tiles are created from a mixture of clay, feldspar, silica, and quartz that is mechanically compacted under pressure and thereafter heated at extreme temperatures. Vitrification happens when the baking temperature varies from 1200 degrees Celsius and 1550 degrees Celsius and, as the name implies ...

The chunks of shale were then ground and sifted into a fine granular powder that was mixed with water to form a soft clay. The clay was then forced down through an extruder into a die to form the products. The fragile, "green" products were dried and then transported to the kilns. Firing took from 50 to 140 hours, depending on the thickness.

The silica starts to melt shortly after, and bonds differently to the alumina, with long, flat layers of each connected by rows of oxygen molecules that line up with each other. That is called vitrification, and by then it has hardened, "plugged the holes" (so to speak) and lined up as a barrier to smaller molecules.

The Firing Process. Clay Squared to Infinity tiles are fired to what is referred to in ceramics as "low-temperature" (cone 04 - 1,922° Fahrenheit). Careful spacing of the tiles in the kiln is necessary to prevent the tiles from fusing together. In the kiln, the glaze turns to glass and fuses to the now vitrified clay body.
