In the early 1980s, commercial in situ oil sands projects started to replace the AOSTRA-sponsored in situ extraction and refining pilot plants. Commercial development progressed from the test pilot plants for four main reasons. First, the industry had experienced technical successes with deep oil sands bitumen extraction at AOSTRA pilot projects.

Sep 20, 2022In-situ oil sands recovery processes use once-through steam generation (OTSG). • Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage recovery process has high greenhouse gas emissions. • Direct contact steam generation (DCSG) injects steam + carbon dioxide into reservoir. • Life cycle assessment results demonstrate that DCSG is better than existing OTSG. •

Steam assisted gravity drainage or SAGD is a method that is widely used to extract bitumen from underground oil sands deposits. This method involves forcing steam into sub-surface oil sands deposits to heat the bitumen locked in the sand, allowing it to flow well enough to be extracted. This technology is particularly relevant in Canada because it is the primary method of in situ extraction ...

There are three deposits of oil sands in Alberta. The largest and most shallow deposit is the Athabasca oil sands area, located near Fort McMurray. The Athabasca is the largest deposit and is the site where all current mining projects are located. The Cold Lake deposit is the second largest and contains only in-situ projects.

Most in situ bitumen and heavy oil production comes from deposits buried more than 350 to 600 m below the surface. Steam, solvents or thermal energy make the bitumen flow to the point that it can be pumped by a well to the surface. No tailings ponds are required for in situ methods of recovery. Sand remains in the ground. Only bitumen is removed.

There are several varieties of in situ technique, but the ones that work best in the oil sands use heat. The first in situ experiment in Alberta took place in 1910, when a Pittsburgh-based outfit, the Barber Asphalt Paving Company, drilled a bore hole into the bitumen and pumped in steam to liquefy the oil. The experiment failed.

COSIA members with in situ operations will strive to: Approximately 90 per cent of the water used in in situ operations is recycled. The remaining 10 per cent is lost mainly due to reservoir retention and the need to remove water with high concentrations of salts and other dissolved solids to maintain effective operational conditions. This water needs to be replaced to make up for these losses.
