Development of Fluoride Removal method: We have developed a method of defluoridation of groundwater, viz., Acid Enhanced Limestone Defluoridation (AELD) technique which involves addition of some acids to water before limestone treatment. We are planning for the field trial of this method in the fluoride affected areas of Assam, India soon.

How is Fluoride Nilogon done? In Fluoride Nilogon, the fluoride containing water, mixed with a small quantity of phosphoric acid, is put into a crushed limestone bed plug-flow reactor and kept for a residence time of at least three hours. Fluoride is removed in the reactor. The water is filtered using a sand-gravel filter after three hours.

Once added to our water supply, fluoride can be tricky to remove. Many common jug and faucet filters are effective at removing large impurities from water, but leave elements like fluoride behind. Various filtration systems claim to eliminate the fluoride in your water, but consumers should be wary.

Fluoride removal from water by phosphoric acid-enhanced limestone defluoridation has been studied in a continuous-flow mode using crushed limestone column by adding dilute phosphoric acid (PA) to the influent water. The flow rate of the gravitationally fed water in an up-flow mode is controlled with a flow controller.

For fluoride sensitive plants, consider adding a gritty material, such as sand or very small crushed stones instead of perlite to make a well drained mix.
