Jun 26, 2021Some people just flex the blade down onto a flat stone to hit the ride line, but that puts more pressure on the tip of the shear. You see a lot of shears where the hollow is gone at the tips from being honed that way. I normally (for scissors) use granite and polishing paper for the flat side - this polishes the absolute outer edges of the flat ...

For this reason, finer grit sized wheels are required to grind hard materials and soft materials are best ground with medium to coarse grit size wheels. For most efficient operation, the grade must be adjusted to suit the hardness of the material. As a general guide, the harder the material, the softer the grade of wheel required.

You can lap Granite to much greater flatness and faster than steel. Granite also has the desirable property of a lower thermal expansion compared to steel. Further, if a steel plate needed repair, it had to be hand scraped by artisans who also applied their skills in machine tool rebuild.

The finish stone, a white translucent Arkansas should be flat, and it will put the straight flat arrises on with the finish sharpening strokes. If you only have hand methods (as opposed to a surface grinder) to flatten badly made edge tool backs, one way is to use a 6" or 7" OD grinding wheel laid flat on a bench as an oilstone.

Grit size and Surface Finish. As an example, on a steel part hardened to 60 HRc, lapped using silicon carbide 500 grit, a pressure of 250 g/cm squared will produce a surface finish of about Ra= 0.2 my (N4) or Rz 0.6-0.8, whereas by reducing the pressure to 50 g/cm squared, a surface finish of about Ra= 0.05 my (N2) or Rz 0.2-0.3 can be obtained.

would be likely quite possible to grind surfaces flat, by surface grinder or even hand grinding with small lapped plates and abrasive. Given the problem of leaving abrasives embedded in the way, one could prevent that by using copper laps and such. Why such an emphasis on scraping with so little on grinding off high spots, etc.

You can either buy dedicated lapping plates, use flat diamond stones (ATOMA's diamond hones are well-regarded for this purpose) or apply abrasive, like lapping powder or sandpaper, to a flat surface. Something like a tile or pane of glass will work nicely. Use a pencil to draw a grid on the surface of the stone. Lap it until the grid is gone.

Yup, the goal is to grind the tip of your blade at 90°. Grinding the blade this way gets the curve to shape quickly, doesn't heat up the blade much and gives you some flats at the tip of your blade to gauge your progress when grinding the bevel. So grind the tip of the blade flat at 90° and down to your Sharpie line.

Lapping processes The principal use of the lapping process is to obtain surfaces that are truly flat and smooth. Lapping is also used to finish round work, such as precision plug gages, to tolerances of 0.0005 in. to 0.00002 in. Work that is to be lapped should be previously finished close to the final size.

A: Grinding refers to the removal of large amounts of material from the surface of the stone. Grinding is used to remove deep scratches and staining as well as lippage (uneven surface) thereby smoothing out the surface of the area making it uniform. What are lapping and honing? Lapping is a sanding or polishing method used to create an accurate finish on a flat or domed surface of a part. Honing is a method of internal grinding used to achieve a precise surface finish and shape on the inside diameter (ID) of a tube, bore, or hole. The honing and lapping processes are both highly controlled.

The diamond stone works so well on coarse work because it cuts aggressively and stays flat. The water stone is great for putting on the final edge. For example, a coarse/fine diamond stone (325/600 grit) combined with a very fine 4000 and 8000 water stone works well for plane irons and chisels.

There is a sweet spot for each razor where the angle of the razor laying across the stone at a certain diagonal will allow the full length of the smiling razors edge to be in contact with the stone all at once. I feel with a more careful sculpturing of the concave portion of the hone this sweet spot would be enhanced. Last edited: Mar 3, 2014
